Life-long Learning Through Established Goals and a Vision

Future as a Learner Essay

Setting future goals or planning for future learning experiences is rather complex because there is a lot of uncertainty in the world of technology and education: the exponentially advancing digital technologies have led to exponential growth in innovation, essentially making the predictability of the future nearly impossible or at least hard to plan for. For example, remember when everyone tried to plan for Y2K? … and then it was a bust? No one wanted to be “that guy” who had horded years worth of food and water in their basement. Similarly, since we can’t begin to fathom the technological advancements that will be available to us in the years to come, trying to create a plan that guides us towards a more sustainable future using tools that don’t exist yet can be scary. As an educator, I must train my students for jobs that may not even exist yet. I must instill the qualities of a creative problem solver and innovative thinker to help my students prepare for a world of unknowns. And, while uncertainty often causes fear, it opens the door to opportunity, creativity, and an abundance of new resources.

 

As I reflect on my future learning and the endless possibilities that lie ahead of me, I have established goals to guide my learning along the way. My overarching goal is to stay current in my teaching and learning practices to ensure that I am meeting the needs of my students and preparing them for the unknown future. This is clearly an evolutionary goal; that is, it will change with learners’ needs and classes. More specifically, I have established three goals for moving forward after my Master’s in Educational Technology. They are as follows: to stay up to date in best practices, to continue to grow, expand and interact with my professional learning community, and to implement tools and resources that I learned about over the course of this program to improve and organize my instructional practice.

Research, Theory, & Best Practice 

Over the course of my time in the MAET program, one area of study that I became particularly interested in is how multimodal visual media affects learning processes. Through the lens of cognitive and neurosciences, I have spent countless hours focusing on how different multimedia combinations interact with how we think and learn. I completed a research study examining best practice, meta-analyses, and cognitive psychology theories regarding how the brain processes information in relation to the most effective media combinations for presenting information and stimulating deep learning. I have grown to be extremely interested in how students learn and under what conditions, and then have gone on to use those findings in many assignments for several classes over the course of this degree. I examined a curriculum design utilizing visual media that supported my findings on audiovisual media and learning achievement. I then went on to examine that curriculum design through the lens of assessment and networked learning. In the future my goal is stay at the forefront of educational research regarding how we think and learn with technology. Particularly, I hope to continue to research visual media effects on learning achievement in order to stay up to date with instructional tools and curriculum approaches that support the development of skills necessary for 21st century learners. 

Personal Learning Network (PLN)

Another goal of mine will be to interact with my Personal Learning Network (PLN) so that I can stay up to date in best practices and technology advancements. I consider my administrators and colleagues to be some of the greatest assets in my PLN. Consequently, my goals moving forward include not only seeking out opportunities that will enhance my learning, but also include looking for opportunities where I can share all that I have learned and enhance others' learning. I plan to do this by accessing more social networking sites for educational purposes, such as Wordpress, Twitter, Instagram, Linked In and YouTube. Creating these connections with other educators around the world will allow me to follow trending topics and share resources. I will also make it a priority continue posting on my personal Wordpress blog, to read more educational blogs, to watch Ted Talks and to participate in webinars. These practices will allow me to expand my knowledge on relevant topics such as best practices, cognitive and neurosciences, and technology integration.

This Popplet was created to display some of the Personal Learning Networks that I currently use. I couldn’t possibly list all the blogs or people I utilize for information related to my work, so I tried to list a few for each. Through the MAET program I have expanded my PLN and have made many connections, whether through my LinkedIn account, Wordpress Blog, or Twitter, my connections continue to grow and expand. Leaving the MAET program, I now have an expansive personal and professional learning network that I can use to share and borrow knowledge. I am always searching for PLNs beyond what I already use and I am excited to learn about new ways to network and grow professionally as I progress beyond the MAET program. I also plan to utilize my PLN in the future to engage in activities and conversations from sources such as Twitter Chats, Bloggers such as Dan Meyer, my blog connections, and other professional development sites online. There is no end for my lifelong personal and professional learning journey because the future is being created right now along with new insights, tools, and resources.

Application of Learning

Another one of my goals is to focus on organizing and improving my instructional resources using technology tools I have learned about over the course of this mater’s program. After analyzing Content Management Systems (CMS) in both CEP 820 and CEP 815, I hope utilize digital platforms to improve my teacher webpage and resources. I am a firm believer that learning can no longer be confined to the years we spend in school or the hours we spend in the classroom: it must be lifelong, life-wide, easily accessible, and available on demand. By incorporating online content to support and supplement my curriculum, I will be able to extend teaching and learning beyond the confines of my classroom walls. Similarly, I would like to utilize web-based tools, such as Evernote, to organize my personal and professional life.

Conclusion

I leave the MAET program with a wealth of knowledge and an abundance of skills. I have learned about numerous technologies to use in the classroom; I've learned how to utilize those technologies in a meaningful way to enhance my students' learning. Although my master’s program has come to a close, the opportunities for continued growth and learning are abundant. Being a dedicated, lifelong learner is crucial to my development as an educator. I plan on continuing to push myself to gain new experiences and insights for teaching students in the 21st century.
